maarten brinkman
Maarten Brinkman (1962), his work is about wonder, surprise. As a child I could endlessly assort grains of sand by colour and spend the whole day at it. As adults we have put everything in pigeon-holes. What is important and what is not. A tree immediately ends up in box ‘tree’, and so you don’t really look at the tree anymore. Snow is white, and if you look properly you see that it can also be pink, grey or yellow. To see something that way you must let go of your established ideas and go and look.
Wonder or surprise I evoke especially by using everyday materials and simple techniques. The viewer should really be able to make it himself.
When does something become art? How many holes do you have to cut in a sheet of paper, or how must you hang up a branch, or place a stone. With a small intervention you can suddenly change something ordinary into something quite different, I am still amazed by this. In fact I am always searching for the turning-point – the moment when a stroke on a piece of paper changes into a bird. That is the point where people can step into their imaginary world.
